Zayeef Sihirbaz was born to a wealthy noble family in Fezen-Tir. His father was an aspiring member of the Azzunatlan. At an early age Zayeef was striken with a serious illness. His parents paid for the best herbal remedies and treatments. Gradually he regained his health and vigor, but his growth was permanently stunted. From the time on, he was always much smaller and weaker than other boys his age. As a result, his parents selected the son of one of the household guards to be a companion and bodyguard for Zayeef. Zayeef quickly became friends with the much bigger and stronger Koruma.

At the age of 13 Zayeef began manifesting his powers as a Warlock. However, he was never comfortable with the prospect of following in his father's footsteps as a member of the Fezen elite. Nor was he diligent with his studies, preferring to pursue the affections of young ladies. In short, he longed for a life of adventure.

One day at the age of 19, his father brought Zayeef (and Koruma, now a member of the household guard) with him on a trip to the marketplace. During their various transactions, his father caught a poor beggar trying to steal from him. His father instructed Zayeef to cut off the beggar's hand as both a suitable punishment and a test of Zayeef's resolve and manhood. Zayeef refused, and rather than face his father's wrath, he fled. His father instructed the conflicted Koruma to catch him and bring him back. However, Zayeef was able to convice Koruma to join him and together they fled the city.

On the outskirts of Fezen they encounted an ancient mystic named Ghizem who took them in. Ghizem was once a powerful Warlock himself, but had since renounced his fiendish heritage and now followed a more englightened path. He gradually inspired Zayeef to become an enlightened spirit as well. Ghizem taught Zayeef about cosmology and the use of magical devices. However, Ghizem gradually succumbed to old age and passed away, leaving a small fortune to Zayeef and Koruma. They began travelling together, looking for adventure.

While passing through Thella-Lu recently, they heard strange tales about people from another land. Zayeef was instantly fascinated, and decided to set about looking for them...
