PIKE'S INTRODUCTION

As you fled the druid grove, pursued by the scarred priest whom you had slashed, you fled into the Aynayjar Mountains in the dead of winter. Although inured to the wilderness, the suddenness of your flight, and the depression you felt at being cast away from yet another place you had hoped to call home led you to wander deep and high into the mountains. As the weather turned from bad to worse, the full fury of the storms battered your body and spirit, and you wandered aimlessly, perhaps even seeking relief in death.

The last thing you remember was spotting a caravan, caught in a mountain pass because of the storm, in a valley below you. Then a blast of wind hit you from behind and you tumbled limply forward, down face first towards the valley below.

When you awoke, you were in a tent, sheltered from the howling winds with warm braziers and a bed of furs. A man with a kindly but grizzled face spooned hot venison stew into your mouth. He introduced himself as Verridus, a trader from the Far Coast who had made a bit of bad judgment regarding the weather and had struck his caravan in a rather precarious position at the summit of the pass. He had wandered out of his tent and walked a bit from the caravan in order to consider his situation away from his fellows when he had espied you tumbling down from the mountainside. While normally he might have simply let the unidentified shape in the snow lay where it fell, something nudged at him and he went to investigate. Seeing that you were no orc or goblin, but a human, he dragged you back to the caravan and tended to you.

Verridus then asked you how you came to be atop the mountains alone in such a season. While you did not wish to divulge the full tale of your past, you did reveal enough to him to display that you needed a place to make your way. Verridus took pity on you then, for he told you that you could accompany the caravan once it was able to proceed and journey with them to the Far Coast.

While Verridus made no promises beyond that, it was during the remainder of the journey that you proved your hunting, wilderness, and scouting abilities on behalf of Verridus and his caravan, on several occasions spotting hidden dangers and steering the caravan away from what might have been danger or even annihilation. So impressed was Verridus with you, and perhaps he also sensed your desperate need for a place to call home, that he offered to recommend you to the master of House Riverine in Dwillingir, for the house could always use good caravan scouts.

Pleased to have perhaps found a new home, you arrived at Dwillingir and made your way to House Riverine. There, while you loitered around the offloading caravan, and lent your strength to help, Verridus went inside. When he emerged some time later, he put his arm around your shoulder and told you that he had spoken of you to Master Barnabus, and that the Trade Lord wished to meet you and would consider you for a position with the house, on the recommendation of Verridus.
