Curinax is a middle aged man of moderate height. He has a bald pate with a crown of graying hair and sport a short graying beard and mustache. His eyes are green and sharp and his brow is scrunched into a perpetual frown.

Curinax is best described as "crusty". He never seems to be in a pleasant mood, and is especially brusque with underlings and servants. He is known to be shy around beautiful women and is respectful to authority figures.

The wizard was born in Iligor in 5483 to a middle class family, and quickly displayed exceptional intelligence. When the boy taught himself to read when he was three years old, his father took him to a local priest. The priest recommended the lad to a hedgewizard, who agreed to take the child as an apprentice. Young Curinax quickly proved his bona fides and by the time he was 18 had come close to outstripping his master in talent. The hedgewizard sent Curinax with a letter of recommendation to the College of Wizardry of Iligor. The boy proved most adept at the transmutative arts, and so he entered the Academy of Changing.

In the academy, Curinax met the love of his life, Shannon. She was a magess studying in the Way of Callings (the school of summoning) and the two grew deeply in love, pledging their troth to marry after they graduated.

A mere week before graduation, Shannon stole away with Curinax and the two became intoxicated on wine. The magess then told her lover she knew a ritual to summon up a minion of Mustiglior who could heighten their lovemaking. Curinax agreed to such a summoning, but whether from her drunkenness or some other reason, her ritual went awry and a terrible demon came forth. The demon grabbed Shannon, and before a horrified Curinax could act the being disappeared through the gate, which closed right after.

Curinax was heartbroken, and he left his studies after a short while and wandered aimlessly, performing minor magicks for living expenses. When the War of the Gem began, the wizard fought on the side of the Free Folk against the minions of the Deceiver, partly as a means to take revenge on demonkind and partially in the vain hope that he would encounter the demon that took his love.

After the war, Curinax determined to try and make a new life for himself, and he wandered to the Far Coast, intending to travel as far from Iligor as possible. He ended up in Dwillingir and was hired by House Riverine by Barnabus' predecessor.

Curinax began to take up the ways of summoning and conjuration. He harbours a slight hope that his love is still alive and in the thrall of the demon, which he has since identified as a nalfeshnee. He summons various abyssal beings to try to determine the name of the demon that took Shannon and to glean any other information that might one day allow him to rescue his beloved should she be alive or, at least, wreak his revenge upon her slayer.

Because of the calamity wrought by strong drink, Curinax never imbibes, and he looks upon intoxication as an evil. The crushing loss of Shannon is what causes him to be grumpy and brusque…a defense mechanism designed to protect him from ever loving or getting close or attached to someone ever again.

Nevertheless, despite his best intentions, Curinax does occasionally take a shine to someone, and though he keeps up his gruff facade, he will show glimmers of affection or respect when caught off guard.
