THE WORD Runequest Campaign
Alar

Written by: Jay (Jonathan)

In the year 1616, the master weaver Benya of Loom, famous for his blue dyes that mirrored the colour of the sky, had a son whom he named Alar. Alar apprenticed under Benya, learning the ways of loom and shuttle. He was a restless lad, always exploring and wanting to know more of faraway lands. After seven years with his master, Alar went to him and said, "Father, I have seen the Masters of Loom and though I could, in time, be one of them, I desire more. I feel to be a really great weaver I need to see firsthand the exotic and wonderful things I try to capture in my weavings. I want to see the world and to become perhaps rich and powerful, even if it means I must risk meeting Orlanth before my time. As a renowned Orlanthi known throughout Sartar, people will vie for my tapestries that they know reflect firsthand knowledge of places and creatures."

And so Benya said, "My son, it is a rough path you are choosing, and I will help you as I can. I have made our king, Kiri, a tapestry as a gift from the citizens of Loom, displaying his glorious defeat of the Lunars and his subsequent regaining of Boldhome. Note the subtler shades of blue in the sky here...this is my best work to date! I will place you in charge of taking this gift to him...speak to him of your desire to see the world."

And so Alar went to Boldhome and presented his King the tapestry and saw his lovely wife the Queen. Later, he spoke to the King and to his great wonderment, Kiri told Alar many of the tales of his adventures, including towers that came alive and of severed fingers of gods the size of a house. He also spoke of his knights and said, "If you prove yourself, you will see great wonders and do mighty deeds, and gain renown you seek. But you must hurry, for soon my knights depart for Pent on errand."

And so Alar hurried on to speak with Lord Terrus about accompanying Kiri's knights.
