THE WORD Runequest Campaign
Kalkin Samildanach

Written by: Unknown

Kalkin Samildanach was born Godsday, Harmony Week, Fire Season in 1611 to Baron William Kalkin and his concubine Lady Samildanach. He has two older half siblings, one male and one female, who were the offspring of Baron Kalkin's wife before she died. Baron Kalkin was the hereditary ruler over some of the best farming lands bordering between Seshnela and Ralios. This land was given by deed of the King of Seshnela for services provided to the crown by the Kalkin family during the revolt of 1049.

Since Kalkin was born to a concubine, he has no title. Nevertheless, his father arranged for him to be raised in a manner befitting a noble's son who has strong allies on the West Coast of Seshnela. Kalkin wears a golden torque with a Law Rune inscribed upon it and a Harmony Rune circumscribed by the Law Rune. This is a family heirloom given to him by his father as a symbol of his pedigree, even though Kalkin has no right of succession.

The lands which Baron Kalkin controls are directly on the front between the feuding King of Seshnela, Guilarm, and Duke Nolos of Ralios. For years Duke Nolos plotted to control these lands, but the king's hold was too powerful. Then, in 1635, Duke Nolos was ready to strike, and he sent demons to slay Baron Kalkin and family. Nolos' troops stormed Kalkin Keep and took it, solidifying his new lordship over the area. The King of Seshnela, dealing with other concerns, was unable to react before Duke Nolos emerged victorious.

Kalkin Samildanach was though to have disappeared into obscurity until an attempted assassination of him by a demon occured during Sacred Time of 1636. Kalkin was moved, taking refuge in the capital city of Seshnela, but in 1637 another attempt occured. The King of Sehsnela was perplexed as to the reasons behind the attempts, as was Kalkin. Was this a ploy to prevent him from reclaiming the Kalkin landholds as the last remaining heir to the land, or was Duke Bolos simply embarking on a genocidal war against the last vestiges of his longtime enemy? Either way the King of Seshnela decided that having Kalkin living under the protection of the crown was too dangerous.

Lady Myrnn, who dwelt in the land, knowing the dangers involved, remembered Lord Kiri Windstorm, a newly crowned king in a far off land to whom her father had lent a hundred iron-clad knights. She sent Kalkin to Kiri as ambassador of Seshnela. Kiri's kingdom was far away from Nolos, so that Nolos might lose track of Kalkin and it would defuse any political repurcussions of the continuing assassination attempts taking place in the heart of Seshnela.

Kalkin Samildanach is a bright man, open and gregarious but somewhat suspicious of pagan religions. Normally he would not associate with pagans, but since the King ordered him to represent Seshnela to Kiri, he grudgingly accepts his duties. He is distrustful of strangers, whom he perceives to be possible spies for Duke Nolos, and is always wary of demonic assassins that may one day attack suddenly. He has changed his garb so as to blend in more with the pagans amongst whom he dwells and he is somewhat reticent about discussing his past, even with confidants.
