Marco Francis Garzelli du Coppi was born in 5515 into a noble and influential family of the Merchant house of Riverine. With his family's privilege and money Marco was given every advantage they could provide him, from the best food to the best tutors. Marco's advantages as a child helped him grow up healthy and with a sharp mind. When the time came, Marco was enrolled into a magical college to learn the basics of the magical arts to finish his education. In college Marco studied as much as he needed to, but no more. He developed a social life and held leadership positions in several student societies. He also took time to become involved with several late night pranks on campus. When he had learned the last rudiments of spellcasting, Marco decided to end his formal education.

When he arrived home his father was upset that Marco did not finish his schooling. Instead, he was able to prevail on his father and in time he allowed him to begin in the family business. Eventually Marco was sent to the Far Coast province city of Dwillingir. At first Marco was disappointed to be sent so far from the Imperial centers of power. He was not told any reason why he was sent so far away and assumed it was punishment for having defied his father. When he confronted his father, he told Marco to open his eyes and see for himself why he was being sent. Before he left for Far Coast, Marco took the time to gather information on where he was going. That is when he began to understand the importance of the Far Coast to House Riverine and their rivals House Mercur. Dwillingir was not a punishment it was an opportunity to prove himself. With that Marco left his home for Dwillingir happily intent on learning more about the merchant business of his house with an eye towards proving himself and earning his spot in House Riverine.

Marco served under Lord Barnabus of House Riverine for a good many years, leading a group of mercenaries to rescue the Trade Lord and expose his doppelganger. As news of his brave deeds filtered south to the Heartland, Marco's father began to hope he might be the one foretold to return the Coppi family to prominence in the Empire. His father presented him with the family's legendary blade Praesidium and with it, Marco went on to even greater deeds. When the House Enforcer, Veribor, was slain by the succubus Abrinda, Marco took his place. He was instrumental in forging a strong alliance between Riverine and Gerilong, and eventually, when Barnabus resigned after the slaying of Abrinda, Marco took over as Trade Lord of House Riverine on the Far Coast.
