Battle's Lament

Introduction: This song was written after a particularly nasty invasion of Crossing during Sidhlot's time. Therrilliar noted how many bloodthirsty citizens were howling for more invasions and more carnage while ignoring the pain and death caused by them.

Atop the grassy knoll now swathed in red
stand I alone and weeping o'er the dead
the valley is littered with broken dreams
and broken bodies, such a waste it seems

Before the twilight sun now gloaming
was past the height of its daily roaming
a fierce battle had raged below
and I had watched its ebb and flow

I heard the cries and screams of men
who were maimed and died, felled by the ten
and now I hear a more sorrowful wail
the laments of women in mourning veil

The wives they pick amongst the gore
hoping not to find what they search for
but when that familiar face they see
is etched in a rictus of agony

Then my heart is filled with immense sorrow
at the loss of the promise of the morrow
for wife and child are now bereft
of the love of husband untimely left

Soon the field shall be of bodies clear
for e'en now the crows draw near
the grass shall grow over green again
and erase all trace of conflict then

And the lives of those who fought and died
shall be forgotten by greensward's hide
and in forgetting, show the folly of war

For those who die can love never more
