Song for Lauretta

In Riverhaven you will find tales bespeaking a terrible tragedy that occured in the Dunshade Manor. When Therrilliar learned of this tale, she lamented for the little child Lauretta, the only truly innocent person in the entire tragedy.

The rhyming scheme in this song is one of the toughest Therrilliar has ever composed. Each of the four lines of each stanza of each verse rhymes with the corresponding lines in each other stanza of that same verse.

In Riverhaven can ye still see
that accursed house of ire
where Byron, wicked Byron
haunts in torment of his crimes

Foppish noble waif was he
with hair of flax and eyes of fire
and of restless mein, this scion
fought wars in far off distant climes

When returned this lord from o'er sea
he saw the object of his desire
Lovely Tatia he doted upon
until the day of wedding chimes

Ah Faenella! Sweet Faenella!
Why must the innocent die?
Lauretta, poor Lauretta
pearl in a sea of blood
untimely ripped from mother's grasp
I still hear your eternal cry

They pledged their love eternally
their life was a thing of bliss
and when Byron's father died
he became the manor's lord

From their union did they conceive
a blessing most precious
the baby Lauretta cooed and cried
a treasure more than any horde

Tatia immersed in the child's need
their sole love did Byron miss
her attention hurt his haughty pride
without her he grew fey and bored

Ah Faenella! Sweet Faenella!
Why must the innocent die?
Lauretta, poor Lauretta
pearl in a sea of blood
untimely ripped from mother's grasp
I still hear your eternal cry

The rage welled up in Byron's breast
and life had lost its charm
and as his soul snapped in twain
he fled the remnants of right mind

Acting at jealousy's behest
he sought to cause them harm
he grabbed the blade in grip insane
and fixed them with gaze unkind

Lauretta's life did he then wrest
bathed in innocent blood so warm
and Tatia screamed in horrored pain
'til by Byron did her life unbind

Ah Faenella! Sweet Faenella!
Why must the innocent die?
Lauretta, poor Lauretta
pearl in a sea of blood
untimely ripped from mother's breast
I still hear your eternal cry

When Byron saw what he had wrought
he briefly gained his sense
he gazed upon his bloody knife
for him there was no respite

He sobbed and wailed at his lot
and then he faced his only penance
he had killed his daughter and his wife
so he plunged himself from the manor's height

At the end his despairing leap was caught
on the spikes of the manor fence
what he most desired he lost to strife
his soul now doomed to walk the night

Forget what lessons this tale has taught
I grieve for the loss of innocence
for a babe in the middle lost her life
and when children suffer, the world's not right

Ah Faenella! Sweet Faenella!
Why must the innocent die?
Lauretta, poor Lauretta
pearl in a sea of blood
untimely ripped from mother's breast
I still hear your eternal cry
